College Counseling

Overview and Timetable

Through the Olney Friends School curriculum, students are preparing for college at all times. However, the formal college counseling program begins in the junior year and continues with greater concentration in the senior year through the weekly non-credit College Class as well as individual meetings with the college counselor.

Olney Friends School offers SAT and TOEFL test preparation courses to second-semester juniors and first-semester seniors. Students do not have to attend university directly from Olney Friends School, but all students must participate in the college process and be accepted to a four-year college or university to graduate.

Just as Olney Friends School values each student individually, recognizing their innate strengths and specific needs, we seek to help them find colleges that are good matches for them academically, socially, and financially.

Junior Year

  • October — PSAT Test
  • February — College trip to two or more colleges/universities; students begin identifying preferences
  • April — College Class begins meeting weekly
  • May — SAT for all juniors
  • May — Students develop preliminary college list
  • Summer — Students discuss plans with parents and continue researching and visiting colleges

Senior Year

  • September — Students revise their college list and meet individually with the counselor
  • September-December — Bi-weekly College Class
  • October — SAT for all seniors
  • November — SAT II if necessary/desired, TOEFL for international students
  • October-December — Students complete applications and essays
  • Spring — College acceptances announced daily at lunchtime!

Life After Olney

A required year-long course that starts in the second half of the junior year and ends after the first half of the senior year. Students receive guidance about their options after Olney, including undergraduate studies, trade schools, and gap-year opportunities. Even though we require students to have at least one college acceptance at an accredited four-year college or university, we encourage them to consider other options, too.
