Olney Friends School

Throwback Thursday: Farm Edition (Part One)

Campus Farm: Friends Boarding School

This is the view of the campus farm some time after 1912 from the 20 Acres hillside. The school was relocated from Mt. Pleasant (where it was founded in 1837) to its current Barnesville location in 1876 and built on the corner of four farms donated by Benjamin Stanton, Barkley Smith, Asa Garretson and Aaron Frame. The Aaron Frame farm — now the Towe Ranch — is on the far hillside. Notice how few trees are in the Girls Woods in the foreground.

The View Looking South

You can see the student dorms and the power house shortly after their construction in 1910. Today, the dormitory to the right serves as the Mary Davis guest house and the power house is more commonly referred to as The Music Box. If you look closely in the distance, you can also see the corn crib next to the old barn (where the greenhouse is currently located). The corn crib was relocated to the Plummer farm and torn down in 1983.
