Olney Friends School

The More Things Change…

The change in curriculum this school year has put considerable emphasis on student leadership. While many teenagers may cringe at the thought, we’ve learned at Olney that responsibility can actually be a really positive thing. So much importance is placed on students exploring their interests, thus we are able to pursue projects and studies that appeal to us. It goes without saying that Olney’s attendees are a creative bunch, and the arts are abounding! Students not only have the opportunity to create art pieces as final projects for academics or participate in a variety of art Endeavors, but many also choose to pursue creative expression in their free time.

A recent collaborate freelance project involved recreating old Olney photos. With the help of Web Coordinator Aaron Schultz, a group of students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, were able to work together in recreating some of the photographic memories captured by Dan Bailey, class of 1970. These pictures feature alumni who attended Olney in the 60’s and onward. Current students were charmed by these images for many reasons. Each of us love this school, its traditions, and its past. The stories of Olney are endlessly fascinating. Being part of such a storied tradition is an honor, and celebrating that tradition is incredibly important to us. Each person who has attended Olney, or taught here, or even just visited is part of the vast, seemingly timeless web of legends and stories that make up Olney’s 178 year history.

But it isn’t just history – it’s our history.

Putting our combined creativity and love for our school together, we decided to replicate some of our favorite photos from the past. Below, you can see the original photos next to their recreation featuring current Olney students (and teacher Leonard Guindon, also a graduate of the class of 1970).  These pictures are our attempt to show and share the continuation of Olney’s great story across several generations, with the understanding that the more things change…

Olney Friends School students would like to thank Dan Bailey for letting us use his amazing photography as inspiration. More wonderful photos can be found at Dan Bailey’s website. /db_olney_archive/
