The hum of an antique press and steaming vats of bubbling juice can mean only one thing at Olney Friends School: The annual sorghum crop has been harvested and the deep brown syrup with a distinctive flavor will soon sweeten all sorts of treats in the Olney kitchen.
When these familiar sights, sounds and smells grace our 350-acre campus this October, we will invite alumni, friends and the public to join us as we celebrate the season with our inaugural Olney Friends School Sorghum Festival. Planned in conjunction with Homecoming, Parents Weekend and the quarterly Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 23-25, the event promises fantastic fall flavors and fun for the entire family.
A full slate of activities is set, including guest speakers, games for all ages, folk dancing, displays and plenty of booths to browse. USDA Certified Organic farm-fresh foods such as potatoes, eggs, pumpkins, winter squashes, gourds and corn meal will be available for sale. And if you’re hungry on the spot, a pot of bean soup will be cooking over an open fire with corn bread on the side.
The availability of on-campus accommodations will be limited, so email [email protected] soon if you would like to make a reservation. You can also contact the Main Office if you would like to set up a booth or make a presentation as part of the festival.
Watch our website and our Facebook page for additional information about the Sorghum Festival and Homecoming/Parents Weekend in the coming weeks.
