At Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio, our 350-acre USDA-certified organic farm has become one of our most challenging academic programs. Students here learn about biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, and mathematics from textbooks while simultaneously using experiential learning to solve real-world problems on our farm.

Chemistry isn’t confined to a lab here at Olney. Students test soil composition to understand nutrient cycles in our fields. Then they analyze pH levels to determine which crops will grow best in different areas of the farm.

Math gets immediately practical when students calculate crop yields per acre, determine how much feed 30 goats need to get through winter, or create budgets for seed purchases. Students at Olney eat food they’ve grown through our farm-to-table program. That changes how they think about nutrition entirely.
Planting lettuce from seed, caring for it over weeks, and harvesting it for dinner creates a different relationship with food. Students try vegetables they grew themselves more readily. They understand why seasonal eating matters and why local, organic food costs what it does.
The farm produces much of what students and faculty consume together.
