Olney Friends School seeks to fill the Chef/Kitchen Manager position for the 2023-2024 school year and beyond. The Kitchen Manager serves on the Administrative Team as a senior member of the faculty and reports directly to the Head of School. Olney Friends School is an ISACS accredited, progressive, co-educational boarding and day school for grades 9 – 12, located in Barnesville, Ohio. It is also a member of the Friends Council on Education (FCE), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Ohio Association of Independent Schools (OAIS), and The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS).
 
THE POSITION
 
The Kitchen Manager at Olney Friends School is a vital link between our 350-acre certified organic farm and school nestled in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio. It is a senior-level faculty and administrative position, encompassing full responsibility for providing 21 meals per week, overseeing the kitchen budget, and managing kitchen faculty and student helpers (hiring, training, and supervising). The Kitchen Manager also works closely and strategically with the farm management to coordinate production, consumption, and preservation of locally produced food that is nutritionally balanced and delicious.
 
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
 
The ideal candidate will have a passion for preparing nutritious organic food and knowledge of teenagers’ and adults’ dietary needs, with a demonstrated ability to successfully cater to vegetarian, vegan, other nutritional needs, and thoughtful menu planning. This candidate will also have a strong desire to work as part of a team in a close-knit, primarily residential community and be a hands-on leader who loves to cook, organize, and maintain a clean, happy kitchen. The candidate should also be willing to teach and learn about the role of food in a thriving, conscientious community, modeling for students and faculty alike what it means to engage in a farm-to-table lifestyle fully. This leader should be willing to teach an elective class during the academic year. A member of the school’s Administrative Team, the Kitchen Manager should have a strategic and visionary approach to developing and maintaining robust food preservation and preparation protocols at Olney while supporting the school’s strategy (2019-2025). The ideal candidate will possess a teaching and leadership style that engenders trust, respect, a collaborative work environment, and a sense of community. This candidate must be willing to live on the Olney Friends School campus or near the school in Barnesville, Ohio.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
 
The ideal candidate will have the following mix of academic qualifications and work experience:
 
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in any field
Certified either as a dietician, public health professional with a specialty in human nutrition, or a similar qualification from a recognized accrediting entity
Possess a canning license or be willing to get one soon after arriving at Olney
At least five years of experience as a cook, sous-chef, chef, school dietician, or in a role similar to that of a kitchen manager in a fast-paced work environment
