Eating Locally at Olney Friends School

Olney Friends School is located in rural southeastern Ohio in Belmont County. With our 350 acres of rolling hills, pasture, farm fields, a small lake, a creek, and woods, we offer students a stand-out “learning laboratory” in local, regional, and global matters at the intersection of energy, economy, and the environment.
The natural resources of Appalachia, including coal and farmland, help to support more populous areas elsewhere. More than 90% of local electricity and more than 50% nationally comes from burning coal.
Our curriculum, which is evolving to center on the natural resources of Appalachia, blends more traditional instructional methods with project-based and place-based learning.
A strong tradition of community service knits the school and town together. Hosting of free cultural events such as concerts, poetry readings, and film screenings also draws the two together. Finally, each year several local students attend Olney Friends School.
