News Release: Olney Friends School Students Get Saucy Again!
Students, of Chris Basler’s organic-gardening class, created and canned
13 gallons of hot and mild salsa as part of their course. In the class,
students grow vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers from
seed. Almost all of the tomatoes, onions, garlic, and peppers used in
the salsa were grown in the organic gardens located on the campus of
Olney Friend’s School. Additionally, the vegetables planted by the
students are harvested and put to use in Olney’s school kitchen.
Faculty, staff, and students enjoy the benefits of the harvest all year
round. Olney Friends School grows only organic vegetables in its
garden, relying on crop diversity, crop rotation, compost, and
beneficial insects to help control pests and diseases.
The practical skills learned in the garden and the kitchen help students
gain some of the fundamental skills needed to thrive in everyday life.
Organic Gardening is one of several practical skills courses taught
throughout the year at Olney Friends School. Other practical skills
courses include woodworking, outdoor education, and home economics.
While the school’s core curriculum consists of an intellectually
challenging college-preparatory program, Olney Friends School recognizes
that there are many skills to be learned in life beyond traditional core
courses. These practical, character-building skills are an important
part of student life at Olney Friends School.
