News Release: Olney Friends School Students Attend Quaker Youth Leadership Conference
Recently, five students and two faculty members from Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio, attended the annual Quaker Youth Leadership Conference in Sandy Springs, MD. The American Friends Service Committee sponsored the conference, which was held February 2-4 at Sandy Spring Friends School. The conference was attended by 181 participants from 23 Quaker schools.
The Quaker Youth Leadership Conference, which is organized entirely by students, was started 9 years ago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize won by the American Friends Service Committee and its British counterpart, Friends Service Council. The theme for this year's conference was "Passion and Compassion," which emphasized the importance of nurturing individual passions while being committed to reaching out and helping others. During the conference, students participated in community service in the nearby city of Washington DC, as well as workshops and group discussions. Says Daniel Gold-Hopton, who is a sophomore at Olney Friends School and attended the conference, "We got to hear other viewpoints on topics that are important in the world today such as war, sexism and racism."
Olney Friends School's students come from diverse international, religious, social and economic backgrounds. Students are encouraged to explore the diversity of their school community and of the wider world community through education and service to others. The college-preparatory program at Olney Friends School provides a strong knowledge base for students from which they can make informed and conscientious decisions throughout their lives.
