News Release: Professional Development

Olney Friends School is proud to announce that several members of the academic faculty will be taking part in a variety of professional development activities during the summer months. Professional development plays a role in equipping schools to meet the challenges facing them throughout the school year. Abbey Chew, Angela George, Chris Basler, Jeff Basler, Marie Craig, and Molly Waters are among the Olney faculty members taking advantage of these opportunities for professional growth this summer. The Olney faculty view teacher learning as continual and life-changing making schools a better place for students and other faculty members.

Throughout the summer months, Olney faculty members will partake in a wide range of diverse activities. Abby Chew, Humanities Department, will be teaching a writing course at John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Angela George, Spanish Department, will travel to Nerja, Spain to enroll in a teacher training course at the Nerja School of Languages. Chris Basler, Humanities Department, was awarded two workshop grants for the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History. She will attend two workshops entitled: Shaping the Constitution: A View from Mount Vernon, 1783-1789 and A Revolution in Government: Philadelphia, American Independence, and the Constitution, 1765-1791. Jeff Basler, Humanities Department, was awarded the Borza scholarship for the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece. He will study classical Greek culture. Marie Craig, Humanities Department, will be teaching English courses at Kabojja Secondary School in Uganda. Molly Waters, Spanish Department, will also travel to Spain to enroll in a teacher training course at the Nerja School of Languages. Additionally, she will participate in a Spanish and flamenco course at Escuela Montalban in Grenada, Spain.

By taking part in professional development activities, the Olney faculty members are playing a vital role in the improvement of student learning. By increasing knowledge teachers not only update their skills and awareness but also transform their roles as educators. These professional development activities will help Olney faculty learn new roles and teaching strategies that will improve student achievement.
