News Release: Poem Published by Sophomore
Nick McGee, 10th grader at Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio, was recently honored when his poem, which remains untitled, was selected by Creative Communication, Inc. to be published in their anthology titled A Celebration of Young Poets. McGee will now also be a candidate for the "Top Ten Poet" award.
McGee was selected for publication among thousands of submissions after he entered his poem about the hurricane that destroyed Galvestion, Texas in 1900, in a contest for young poets. The contest was sponsored by Creative Communication, Inc. a publishing company dedicated to "the promotion of writing, teaching and appreciation of poetry." Creative Communication, Inc. typically publishes less than 50% of the submissions it receives. While McGee will always have the honor of being a published poet, he will also receive a free copy of the anthology that includes his work.
McGee submitted the poem as part of an assignment for his 10th grade humanities class, taught by Chris Basler. Humanities classes are core elements in the college preparatory curriculum at Olney Friends School. Each year students take a humanities course that combines literature with history and focuses on a central theme such as "The American Experience" or "Ancient Peoples and Places." Olney Friends School provides an intellectually challenging academic program for grades 9-12 in a supportive Quaker community.
