News: Olney Friends School Hosting Music Camp

On July 8th, 2007 approximately 70 campers and a large number of staff members arrived at Olney Friends School to kick off the 28th annual Friends Music Camp. Along with the camp staff, the talented, young musicians will be holding concerts and recitals throughout the months of July and August.

The camp is for musicians between the ages of 10 to 18. There are students from a variety of different states at this year's camp and even some international countries. Campers have the option of staying for a varied period of two or four weeks. "We encourage fun, personal growth, and musical development at Friends Music Camp," said Peg Champney, director of Friends Music Camp. "We emphasize music without competition through community and Quaker values."

Friends Music camp is well organized, with students having time to learn and relax. All band orchestra instruments, piano, guitar and voice lessons are taught. Campers take part in many outdoor activities such as: hiking, canoeing, and a variety of other friendly games. Throughout their stay, campers perform concerts for the public. Champney said the public is welcome to attend the events and experience the progress of the musicians and watch their skills grow and develop.

Many opportunities exist to witness the beautiful sounds of the Friends Music Camp. Staff recitals will be held on July 17th, July 19th, July 24th, and July 26th at 7:45pm in the Collection Room at Olney Friends School. Student concerts will be held: July 21st at 1:00pm and August 4th. The Final Concert will take place on Saturday, August 4th starting at 1:00pm lasting throughout the afternoon.
