Olney Friends School
News Release:
Olney Students Visit Mosque

Recently twelve students and two faculty members from Olney Friends School visited the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, where they toured the mosque and community center as part of their World Religions class. Chris Basler teaches the World Religions elective and has also arranged for the class to visit a reform Jewish temple and a Hare Krishna temple.

These diverse places of worship allow students to interact with people of varying faiths with different customs and beliefs. Says Ms. Basler, "It is inspirational to observe students learning about the worship of Eastern religions at Buddhist temple, or engaging in discussion about sacred texts with an imam, rabbi, or priest." Such interactions broaden student views about cultures, and stimulate emotional and intellectual growth by encouraging young people to step out of familiar surroundings.

This year students from Olney Friends School come from the United States, Japan, Korea, Uganda, Poland, China, Vietnam, Rwanda, Serbia, and Ecuador. Through its academic curriculum and in daily life, Olney Friends School strives to teach respect for and celebration of cultural, ethnic and religious differences. Classes such as World Religions provide a structured and safe environment in which students can explore the complexities of faith and belief around the world.
