Olney Friends School
News: Marching For Peace

Olney Friends School staff and students participated in events to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King. The annual Martin Luther King community celebration gives us all a chance to reflect upon the past while seeking hope, determination and an opportunity to act upon the promise of the future,” said committee spokesperson Brenda Harris. Members of Olney Friends School participated in a march which began at two spots along National Road in Wheeling(Temple Shalom and Wheeling Park). The walk ended at Wheeling Jesuit University.

Between 1955 and 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. worked to change America. He brought to the world's attention how unfairly African Americans were treated, especially in the then, segregated South. He had the help of millions of Americans, but his strong leadership and powerful speech gave people the faith and courage to keep working peacefully even when others did not. This led to new laws that eliminated racial segregation.

America remembers the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. as it celebrates his birthday on the third Monday in January every year. This is the first national holiday to honor an individual African American.
