News Release: Memories from Fall Term 2005
Collection is held twice a day. It is a time for reflection and meditation and sometimes we have themes to them or dedicate them to individuals, places or ideas. During evening collection before Christmas break, Peggy Conant, Assistant Head of School, recalled her favorite memories from the fall term. She invited others to do so as well. Below is a sampling of what was shared:
The Junior class bonding experience at Malaga Lake was Peggy Conant's favorite memory. Highlights included: everyone swinging on a rope to get into the water; being in a pond for the first time for one student; holding onto wet pants so that they wouldn't fall off while swinging on the rope or going into the water.
Eric, a senior, spoke of an overnight outdoor education hiking and camping experience that is his favorite memory that he'll take with him over break. He described a miserable day of rain that clouded in the whole group on the first day. However once they made a fire outside and got dry inside the tent, things were looking up. The evening spent playing cards helped too. The payoff for all of their hard work came the next morning when they awoke to a beautiful fall day in Pennsylvania that pictures could not do justice to.
Nathan, a senior, recalled that his favorite fall event was Service Day. That day he got a chance to reconnect in a meaningful way with his roommate from last year.
Meg Short, Admissions Director, shared that her favorite fall activity was one that Cleda Mott organized and it was the first event of the year. Yes, none other than the long-standing tradition of "Almost Anything Goes." Every part of the activity was a bonding and fun experience, from the creative team names and costumes such as "Mine is Longer than Yours" and "7 Ladies and a Tramp," to the giant waterslide. The friendships that developed seem to be the hallmark of the Olney Experience.
As a four-year senior, Sam's favorite trip this fall was fittingly a visit to Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Additionally, his favorite memory on Olney's campus was an elective music class with Priscilla Mozena.
Graham, a junior, was content with the simple activities that students are so free to enjoy at Olney. He recalls jumping in a pile of leaves with a senior and just having fun with leaves and friends. He also enjoyed a time when he was able to hang out with the head of the boy's dorm and just catch up a bit.
Louise, a senior, recalls her very first Outdoor Education class this fall where they all climbed a tree and had class. Where else but Olney could students have class in a tree, she pondered!
Witnessing a simple student initiated game was what Brett Potash, teacher and head of boy's dorm, chose to share with the group. He spoke of an evening when he was on duty and Louise, a senior, came to the school store and asked for four pennies. After Brett gave her the pennies, Louise stepped outside with glee to meet up with three of her friends. Soon they were tossing up a penny, one at a time, as high into the night sky as they could and then rushed to be the first to find it in the dark. Brett admired the sense of sheer fun, play and freedom with which those students approached their home-made game.
