Olney Friends School
Senior Humanities Kafka Projects

As the Senior Humanities class prepares for graduation, students have become increasingly responsible for independent work and research. This quarter we read Franz Kafka's short story, "The Metamorphosis," and students responded to the story in highly creative, unconventional ways. Taking a break from formal tests and academic essays, students devised their own group projects, selecting group members, choosing a group name, writing a group mission statement, and producing a formal written proposal and rubric for evaluation of their projects. On Tuesday, March 4th, groups will present their projects for their peers and teacher in Senior Humanities. One group will feature a _Bug Weekly_ magazine (hard copy) with interviews and articles of interest to the "Bug Underground," with Gregor Samsa as an elusive and heroic member. Another group will share their MySpace page for Gregor Samsa and comment blog featuring words of insight and advice from Modern and existential writers, Franz Kafka and Virginia Woolf. The third group will share their video talk show featuring interviews with 3 faculty members and 2 students at Olney concerning their responses to the major themes presented in this famous short story. The talk show will also incorporate commentary from the hosts and a special musical soundtrack.
