Hoang Dang, a new Olney junior, studied drawing with his parents in Viet Nam. A set of his large graphite sketches, still-life's featuring cultural artifacts representative of his country, are currently on display in the Main Hall.

Recently, five students and two faculty members from Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio, attended the annual Quaker Youth Leadership Conference in Sandy Springs, MD. The American Friends Service Committee sponsored the conference, which was held February 2-4 at Sandy Spring Friends School. The conference was attended by 181 participants from 23 Quaker schools.

Student Poem Published
Nick McGee, 10th grader at Olney Friends School, was recently honored when his poem, which remains untitled, was selected by Creative Communication, Inc. to be published in their anthology titled A Celebration of Young Poets. McGee will now also be a candidate for the "Top Ten Poet" award.

Rayna Gellert and Susie Goehring Perform at Olney Friends School
On Saturday, November 26, 2005 Olney Friends School was honored to host Rayna Gellert and Susie Goehring in a concert benefiting the school. Although school was not in session at the time of the concert, the two performers drew a local audience as well as fans from Columbus and Athens, OH. Performing in concert together for the first time, Gellert and Goehring showcased many favorites from their recently recorded CD titled Starch and Iron.

Two students from Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio, were recently selected to participate in the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) East Central Regional Orchestra. Kate Ulrich, 12th grader at Olney Friends School, was honored with the principal flute chair and Sarah Mozena, also a 12th grader, was honored with the principal violin chair.

On September 20-22, 2005, Olney Friends School, hosted Shelley Newby, a Quaker from New Castle, IN. On September 3, 2005, Newby began a 540 mile "walk for peace" from New Castle, IN to Washington D.C. Newby hopes to arrive in Washington D.C. by mid-October.

Olney Friends School Students Get Saucy
On September 9, 2005, ten students from Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio, traveled to Athens, Ohio to "get saucy," or rather, to cook up and can organic salsa. The ten students canned their salsa at a facility at the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks, a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable economic development in southeastern Ohio and surrounding areas. The students canned a total of 165 jars of medium and hot salsa.
