Olney Friends School
News Release: Homecoming 2006

On October 13th-15th, Olney Friends School celebrated Homecoming and Parents Weekend. Alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students enjoyed fun, games, and chilly weather as we celebrated our annual Homecoming. The festivities began Friday night with dinner followed by the Olney chorus Gala in Collection Room. The Gala featured performances by members of the Olney Spanish classes and the Olney chorus.

During the early, frigid hours of Saturday morning, runners and walkers alike prepared for the annual Olney Distance Run (known as the ODR). The ODR is open to all who wish to participate and consists of a three-mile course. Participants are welcome to run, walk or mosey the distance. All who finish the run are rewarded with a limited edition t-shirt specially designed by DR Stanley, Art Teacher. Shortly after the ODR, a Neuro Feed-back presentation was given. The presentation was insightful and informative on how parts of the brain contribute to learning.

After a hearty lunch, Homecoming attendees were ready to watch the annual field hockey and soccer games in which current Olney students played Olney alums. Despite the enthusiastic encouragement of field hockey coach Shelley Rockwell, the students were defeated by the alumni. The soccer game proved to be intense as the students managed to prevent an alumni victory. Despite who won the games, fun was had by all participants. Following a sumptuous meal, the evening program began. This year’s program featured a panel discussion by faculty at Olney Friends School. The panel was asked to speak about their summer development experiences. Throughout the summer months, Olney faculty members participated in a wide range of diverse activities. Angela George, Spanish Department, traveled to Nerja, Spain to enroll in a teacher training course at the Nerja School of Languages. Additionally, Molly Watters, Spanish Department, also traveled to Spain to enroll in a teacher training course at the Nerja School of Languages. Additionally, she participated in a Spanish and flamenco course at Escuela Montalban in Grenada, Spain Chris Basler, Humanities Department, was awarded two workshop grants for the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History. She attended two workshops entitled: Shaping the Constitution: A View from Mount Vernon, 1783-1789 and A Revolution in Government: Philadelphia, American Independence, and the Constitution, 1765-1791. Jeff Basler, Humanities Department, was awarded the Borza scholarship for the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece. He studied classical Greek culture. Marie Craig, Humanities Department, taught English courses at Kabojja Secondary School in Uganda.

Homecoming weekend came to a close Sunday with students and staff attending Meeting for Worship in Stillwater Meeting House. In all, it was a wonderful weekend and we hope even more people will join us next year.
