Olney Friends School
News Release: Homecoming 2005

This past weekend Olney Friends School enjoyed fun, games, and beautiful weather as we celebrated our annual Homecoming. The festivities began Friday night with dinner followed by folk dancing in the Collection Room and outdoor volleyball behind the gym.

Saturday morning dawned clear and sunny (and a bit chilly) as serious runners and not-so-serious walkers alike prepared for the annual Olney Distance Run (known as the ODR). The ODR is open to all who wish to participate and consists of a three-mile course. Participants are welcome to run, walk or mosey the distance. This year's top three male finishers were: Brett Potash, OFS teacher, with a time of 17.35, Alan Woolley, OFS Alum, with a time of 18.53, and Wally Bullard, OFS staff, with a time of 20.26. The top three female finishers were: Monica Mikelson, OFS sophomore, with a sophomore record time of 22.21, Chris Basler, OFS teacher, with a 30-39 age group record time of 22.41, and Caroline Guindon, daughter of OFS alum, Don Guindon, with a time of 26.35. All who finish the run are rewarded with a t-shirt specially designed by DR Stanley, Art Teacher.

After a sumptuous repast of various soups and salads, Homecoming attendees were ready to watch the annual field hockey and soccer games in which current Olney students played Olney alums. Despite the hearty encouragement of field hockey coaches Chris Basler and Shelley Scott, the students were defeated by the alumni with a score of 5-2. Ingrid Pancoast, sophomore, scored both goals for the students. The following soccer game proved to be intense as the students managed to prevent an alumni victory with a final score of 4-4. Kyungbong Ha, junior, Alex Tabera, junior, and Gilbert Nkunrunziza, senior, all scored for the student team.

After a dinner of beef stew, with beef raised on the Olney farm, the evening program began. This year’s program featured a panel discussion by recent graduates of Olney Friends School. The panel was asked to speak about their college experiences. Questions for the panel were prepared by the college counseling class offered to seniors at Olney Friends School. Topics included "time management," "college as a less structured environment," "financial aid responsibility," "working and going to school," and "college preparedness."

Homecoming weekend came to a close Sunday with students and staff attending Meeting for Worship in Stillwater Meeting house. In all, it was a wonderful weekend and we hope even more people will join us next year.
