Olney Friends School
News Release: In The Manner of Friends

Olney Friends School, Barnesville, OH, announces the hiring of its new Admissions Assistant, Heidi Porter, resident of Bethesda, OH, graduate of Union Local ('97) and most recently, Ohio University (2006). Porter was selected out of a pool of about 65 applicants. Admissions Director Meg Short (formerly Admissions Coordinator at Shady Side Academy Middle School in Pittsburgh) was most impressed with Porter's communications background at Ohio University where Porter graduated Summa Cum Laude and was named Top Communications Major. Porter will begin her M.A. in education at Muskingham College this summer in hopes to further contribute to the Olney/Admissions community. Having begun at Olney nearly three weeks ago, Porter's first impression of the school was that it was "its own little community (that) welcomed newcomers (and had a) healthy dose of diversity (sprinkled in for good measure)".

Reflecting on her three weeks on the job, Porter notes three aspects of Olney stand out as hallmarks of the school: relationships among staff, strong history and traditions and loyalty among alumni. Having previously worked at a large institution, the Bethesda native appreciates the non-hierarchical nature of the school. She enjoys the fact that the staff are treated as equals - from the cooks and farmers to the teachers and administration. "I find this a refreshing environment in which to work." Having been on campus during graduation and alumni weekend, Porter got a chance to see the results of an Olney education and the schools rich traditions and loyal alumni base. In turn, this loyalty from alums was evidenced the next week during which time friends from a variety of occupations including 2 board members, a current parent, several alums and a few staff members and teaching faculty all collaborated to rebuild the roof of the schools east porch. To her, "this commitment reflects that the people of the Olney Community ...(like those in the Barnesville, Ohio Valley and Tri-State area) ... really care; not just temporarily, but in a lasting way" ... in the manner of Friends".

Olney Friends School, nested in the northwest foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, is an academically challenging college preparatory school within a supportive Quaker environment.
