Olney Participates in Historic "Focus The Nation"
On January 31, Olney students, faculty, alumni and friends participated in the largest national teach-in on climate change in U.S. history. Olney, along with over a thousand other institutions nationwide, sponsored the national educational initiative known as "Focus the Nation." The symposium was dedicated to giving U.S. students at least one day of focused discussion about global warming solutions.
Beyond educating students on the myriad of challenges and possible solutions, the colloquium was also meant to serve as promotion of civic engagement. Olney invited local, state and federal political leaders and decision-makers to come to our campus and participate in the event. While we were only joined by a few local leaders, we were glad to have participated in the letter writing campaigns that preceded the event and encouraged students to continue to write to their representatives after learning from the event.
Our day was comprised of lectures, film, a wide variety of student presentations, and break-out group work. Students, faculty, guest speakers and audience members participated in small group discussions about individual roles and ways to institute change; group representatives then reported back to the whole, giving all attendees a wide variety of ideas and perspectives.
Olney was proud to be one of the 1900 schools to engage students on January, 31 and we feel confident that what they learned will guide them in their own decisions and practices.
