Upcoming Event: Olney Friends School Students Take 3rd Place in Envirothon

On May 3, 2006, two teams of five students from Olney Friends School, Barnesville, Ohio participated in the annual Ohio Envirothon, held at the Hartford Fairgrounds. The Olney Blue Team took 3rd place out of 52 participating teams and will advance to the state competition. Participating on the Blue Team are Eric Kaiser, senior, Sarah Mozena, senior, Gilbert Nkurunziza, senior, Hannah Good child, junior, and Cecily Allen, junior. Says Leonard Guindon, Olney Friends School Environmental Science teacher, "The Envirothon is a competitive event for high school students sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Districts. It tests the students' knowledge of Ohio's natural resources in five categories: soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues. This year the theme of the Envirothon was 'Water Stewardship in a Changing Climate.'"

2006 is the 10th year of Olney's participation in the Envirothon. This year also marks the third time in ten years that an Olney team has advanced to the state competition. The Blue Team will compete against other top-scoring teams from across the state on June 11, 12, and 13 at the University of Findlay, Toledo, Ohio.

Students on Olney Envirothon teams are members of the Environmental Science class, offered to juniors and seniors at Olney Friends School. The competition, with its emphasis on conservation of natural resources, highlights a major theme of the year-long course: working to build a sustainable society. As part of its college-preparatory curriculum, classes such as Environmental Science help foster an awareness of the interactions between humans and the rest of the natural world.
