Olney Friends School
Exhibit of graphite sketches by Hoang Dang, on display in Main Hall

Hoang Dang, a new Olney junior, studied drawing with his parents in Viet Nam. A set of his large graphite sketches, still-lifes featuring cultural artifacts representative of his country, are currently on display in the Main Hall.

Although Hoang had never before done architectural renderings, at the request of Mary Sidwell he embarked on several sketches of the buildings on the Main including this work in progress of 'Senior' Porch.

I recently interviewed Hoang and other international students about their Olney experience. He responded:

"I feel free here. I can express, experience my ability. In my old school I try to show my ability but I was not successful. Here everyone came to me, to share with my feeling, express my ideas. Here I can think about myself, my family and talk with my friends my teachers and I can figure out 'Who am I?'

At Olney you can find out what you want to do in life, can express yourself. I can plan what to do in my future. When I have a hard problem to solve or have to pass hardship in the future I will know what to do."

Let's hope Hoang includes his impressive artistic talent in his college and future plans.
