Olney Freshmen experience a night in nature!
On October 6, 2006, the freshman class participated in an overnight camping adventure. The 9th grade class and faculty members, Abby Chew and Leonard Guindon, shared in an evening of fun and adventure under the stars in the great outdoors. The event served as a unique class setting for the students to learn about themselves, nature, and to make new discoveries. Because the students and faculty at Olney Friends School are interacting at all hours of the day, daily life at Olney makes for intense bonding experiences. That coupled with sharing in the common goals and traditions of the school foster intense friendships. Because of this inspiring atmosphere, the freshman experience at Olney is unique. Since students are away from home most of the year, they have to learn to rely on themselves. They do have staff supervision, but for the most part, that's just for guidance. Most students make their own decisions. With guidance from Olney faculty, the responsibility for completing tasks falls solely on the student's shoulders. In addition, since students basically live together, they learn how to solve petty differences and squabbles and become better at compromise. Exercises like the freshman outing, are a fun and exciting opportunity to bond with classmates and faculty. Olney experiences like the freshman excursion, go beyond just sharing a special time and place together, but they draw upon a sense of accomplishment and self-sufficiency.
