What will happen when I arrive at Olney Friends School?
- First, you will be met by a welcoming committee of returning students who will help you move your belongings into the dorm.
Note: Official rooms are not assigned until August 27. You will be given a temporary room until then. Only unpack the things you will need for two nights and two days. Suggestion: pack a smaller bag with toiletries, sleepwear and just the clothing that you will need for those first two days. This is recommended as carry-on luggage for those traveling by plane in case your checked luggage is delayed for any reason.
Note: If you would like to purchase sheets, pillow and a blanket from the school, please let us know by email (mainoffice@olneyfriends.org). The cost for this bedding is $40, and this can be charged to your account with parental permission.
- After moving your things into the dorm, you should go to the Main building to do the following things (Parents should accompany children if traveling with student to school):
- Register for classes -- Mary Ellen Newport, Academic Dean, and Jeff Basler, Curriculum Coordinator (library)
- Speak with the nurse -- Becky Hurley (library)
- Speak with the business manager -- Bev Shull (business office)
- Once you've taken care of registration, you'll be encouraged to take a tour if you've never been on campus or to join in campus activities planned by the students on welcoming committee.
- Your parents will be encouraged to attend one of the two parent orientation meetings at 3:30 or at 5:00 if they are with you. This will give them an opportunity to meet the Head of School and have some of their questions answered while you join in on campus activities and start to get to know other students.
- Somewhere between 4:00 and 6:00, you will say goodbye to your parents. It might be a sad time for your parents, so remember to tell them how much you will miss them and how much you love them for allowing you to come to such a great school.
- At 6:00 we'll all eat supper together in the dining hall followed by dinner clean up. If you are lucky, you will be chosen to help out on dish crew your very first day at Olney!
- After dish crew, we will all gather for some more orientation activities.
During the first three days, we won't start classes, but you'll still be taking in a great deal of new information about life at Olney. We'll break up those first 3 days with a lot of fun activities designed to help you get to know your new school and schoolmates better. We'll also give you time to get good rest each night.
Don't worry, you are going to love it here!
