Two Alums Establish Nonprofit for Eye Health

Date:
June 19, 2012

In the spirit of Olney’s commitment to service, two Olney Friends School graduates, C. Edward Wall ‘60 and John Whitacre ‘60, in partnership with a Detroit doctor of optometry, Dr. Bernard Miller, have established iChallenged — a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation to help save the eyesight of uninsured and underinsured individuals, primarily in southeast Michigan.

Established in 2010, iChallenged is providing eye care and sight saving services to more than 3000 patients a year. Programs include glaucoma screening and care; a diabetic program; a low-vision program; a grandparents program; the Uncle Sam Program for Veterans; the Eye See Clearly Program; and a retina surgery program.

iChallenged also provides rehabilitation training to those who go blind. The rehab services include mobility training, skills of daily living training, computer training, and training in the use of other technologies that empower the blind to continue working and that enrich their lives. These services are not limited to Michigan and already are being provided as far away as Jamaica – via remote training technologies developed by Whitacre. iChallenged calls the application of these technologies “One-on-One Guided Training.” Many of iChallenged trainers are themselves blind.

If iChallenged can be of assistance to Olney alumni with vision problems please contact jwhitacre@ichallenged.org.
