Documentary Film and Q&A with Filmmaker Curt Ellis
The film traces the journey of two best friends, Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney, who return to Iowa to investigate the environmental impact of an acre of corn they planted. Their journey takes them by canoe and paddleboat down the waterways affected by runoff from modern, large-scale farming. Their former collaboration, “King Corn,” won a Peabody Award.

Families and the public are invited to attend the school’s annual Gymnastics Exhibition, known as “Gym Ex.” Events will include tumbling, rope jumping, balancing, poly pole (routines including 10-foot plastic poles, set to music), and swing dancing. Student performances represent the culmination of several weeks’ focus on gymnastics, as all students during the third academic quarter devote their sports block (at least two afternoons a week) to mastering brand-new skills.
The exhibition happens annually on the Friday before spring break, with many parents in attendance. The evening culminates in a candlelit presentation by the girls, as they sing to the boys.

Photonics – including fiberoptics, biosensors, solar cells, LASERs, and a wide variety of other communications and imaging devices – was the topic of a talk by Boston University graduate student Nate Lawrence.
Questions after Lawrence’s talk ranged from the nature of laser surgery to the energy efficiency of fiberoptics to the viability of building a light saber after the manner of “Star Wars.”
Lawrence is the brother of Kim Wagner ’12, who suggested the visit. (Both are pictured here.)

What do the Dirty War in Argentina, plastic surgery, the Cinderella archetype, and the pros and cons of human genetic manipulation have in common? They are all topics of 2010 graddy essays.
The graddy essay, for those unfamiliar, is the 20-page research paper required of Olney Friends School seniors before graduation. You are invited to a poster exhibit of this year’s presentations. Arrive when you can; leave when you must. Exhibits will be on display throughout the Main Building. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the evening.
Please join us for a taste of the seniors’ creativity and effort!

The Silent Auction starts at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and closes at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Sale merchandise will be displayed during that time in the Olney Friends School Collection Room.
Olney-related pictures and artifacts, homemade crafts, artwork, recorded music, baked goods, and regional foods or crafts are always favorites at the auction.
If you have items to donate to the auction, please bring them to the Collection Room on Friday, or send them by mail to Cleda Mott’s attention. Please include written descriptions of each item and, if desired, suggested starting bids. It would be helpful to know if you plan to contribute items. Please email Cleda Mott at cleda@olneyfriends.org.
Like a Phoenix Rising?
In 1910, Olney arose from the ashes when the Main Building was heavily damaged by fire. Last year we celebrated ten years since a more recent rebirth of the school. Mindful of the school’s rich resources, including its history, we will examine the way forward that is unfolding for Olney. The Board of Trustees has started a process of discernment for the school’s future. A series of “summit” meetings during the 2010-2011 school year will be held to gather and develop a vision for the emerging Olney.
Jack Hanna Visits Captina Creek
Wednesday, May 26, 2010
Dozens of Olney Friends School students participated in a local event sponsored by the Belmont Soil and Water Conservation District and the Friends of Captina Creek. The two groups invited Jack Hanna from the Columbus Zoo to Belmont County to raise awareness about protection of Captina Creek. Hanna, accompanied by his zoo animals, appeared at the Carnes Center in St. Clairsville.
The students arrived early for the all-afternoon and all-evening event to help with setup, check in guests, and park vehicles. The Captina Creek has been recognized both for its commendable water quality and for being home to rare and endangered species, including the eastern hellbender. Its headwaters run through the Olney Friends School campus.
Wheeling Heritage Trail Bicycle Tour

Other riders from Olney included director of maintenance Joel Rockwell ’83, front office manager Shelley Rockwell ’82, business manager Bev Shull ‘68, board member John Rockwell ‘56, and his spouse and former OFS office manager Wanda Rockwell ‘56, and webmaster Bill Cullingford.
