Panel 1: Case Studies of Organizational Transformation

Thursday, October 28
2:00-3:15 p.m.

Description: One of the questions board members asked each other at their January 2010 retreat to envision the future of the school was, “How will we become it?” Because of its small size, the school can be nimble in adapting to change. Will the pace be evolutionary or revolutionary – or both?

For this panel discussion, we have invited speakers to impart stories of organizational change: How did the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks (ACEnet) begin? How has its work affected community development in Athens, Ohio and the surrounding area? How has a small town in Canada changed as a result of citizens’ actions? How and why did Sterling College evolve from a boys boarding school into a coeducational Work-Learning-Service college? What broader stories of change have been witnessed by the Quaker Institute for the Future?

With this general framework in mind, we ask each panelist to speak briefly (5-8 minutes) to at least the first, and perhaps to both, of the following questions:

  1. Please tell us the story of your organization, or a part of that story – how it began, how it changed, how it has transformed the surrounding community.
  2. What might Olney learn from your organization’s experience?
