An Interview with Rich Sidwell – On Olney’s Next Steps, and His Own

What does Olney Friends School have to offer the world, that no other school can?
Through our vantage point in Appalachia, our students and teachers gain a valuable window on energy, economy, and the environment. Our region has long been a site for coal mining; now, it is becoming a site for natural gas exploration. The lessons that affect us locally and regionally, also affect us globally. In our corner of rural southeastern Ohio, Olney Friends School has a useful vantage point on some of the world’s most pressing topics – including the provision of natural resources for personal and public health, and for economic growth in both developing and developed countries. With 50-60 students from more than a dozen countries, we are also a microcosm of at least many parts of the world’s population. What better setting for young people to learn about global sharing of resources?
In the spring of 2012, a board committee convened to produce a strategic plan. The full plan is attached below.
I extend my deepest gratitude for the generative thinking that filled the 2010 Summit gathering with anticipation for the next chapter in Olney Friends School’s history, and I look forward to keeping the wider Olney community apprised of our progress as we implement Olney’s strategic plan.
In community,
