Split Pea Soup with Popcorn

Posted by: Santha Bundy Farah '64 on May 16, 2013 One of my favorite memories as a teenager is when I came to Olney and learned how to appreciate split pea soup with popcorn! Prior to coming to Olney, I had refused to eat it. While I was babysitting for a faculty member one Sunday nightm however, they made split pea soup. Secretly, I had made up my mind to come up with a way around it! Instead of crackers, popcorn was used, and we popped the can over the fireplace. The smell of the pea soup was aromatic, rich, and buttery. I tried the soup with the popcorn, and today I still consider it comfort food! read more »

Early May at Olney

Posted by: Kelsi Miller '14 on May 16, 2013 As springtime comes around, so comes the need to be outside. Unfortunately, the AP exams and SATs come around too. The first couple weeks of May were not only lovely and stunning and warm and spectacular, but also stressful, hectic, and filled with realizations. The junior class had their first go at tackling the SATs from early Saturday morning until a bit past lunchtime, and it didn’t help that we had our papers due soon and other homework as well. Some of the juniors had to deal with AP exams for US History, Spanish, Calculus, Physics, and Electricity and Magnetism as well as many of the seniors and some sophomores. Life has been very interesting for the senior class as we near the end of the year! Some are itching to be free, to... read more »

Skipping Stones, on Camera

Posted by: Davis Marklin '14 on May 15, 2013 The small things here, like going down to the lake to toss stones in the water for the school’s promotional video, make Olney, well, Olney. Two weeks ago on Tuesday, Aaron Woolf, a good friend of a past humanities teacher, and his friend Derek, visited Olney to shoot a short film to advertise the school. I thought it was really fantastic to see them set up in various rooms with all of their fancy equipment such as the huge camera and the light deflection panel, interviewing students and faculty alike. Unfortunately, I was never interviewed but it was an enjoyable experience nevertheless.Immediately following dinner, everybody went down to Livezey Lake to skip stones for what I hope will be the ending sequence for Olney’s promotional video.... read more »

Cultural Pearls

Posted by: Galatea Kurz '15 on May 09, 2013 Olney would not be the same without its diversity. We come from everywhere. Roughly half the school’s population is made up of Asians, Middle Easterners, Europeans, Africans, and South Americans. The other half are US citizens. Even among them, there are kids coming from all over the continent! The whole school, faculty and students, takes great pride in our cultural buffet.Every year in April, student activities director Cleda Mott ‘57 gives us a chance to show some of the local residents our backgrounds. She takes a group of international students to Belmont College, a local community college, where we attend an event called Cultural Pearls. A table is given to each country. Lining the room this year, we had two students from... read more »

Gym Ex: Family, Tradition, and Something Larger than Myself

Posted by: Kelsi Miller '14 on Apr 22, 2013 For me Gym Ex is about tradition. Knowing that I am the eighth member of my family and the third generation to attend Olney, means that participating in Gym Ex and similar activities is really special. It makes me feel as though I am a part of their lives, and a part of something larger than myself. That I’m a part of a pyramid made of my friends and me is awesome enough, but to also be aware that once my dad and other family members were a part of that same pyramid, kneeling in exact same spot that I am now, with nothing separating us except for Time, makes it an incredibly rewarding experience. This being my first year, I didn’t know what to expect from Gym Ex. It ended up being so much fun! It was thrilling to not only be performing in... read more »
