Our work program gives students the opportunity to become invested in the maintenance of the community and find value in useful work. Students know that they are integral to the care of the community.
Each day, students perform either a community chore that we call "office work," or they clean up after meals in dish crew. Every three weeks, students rotate through the office work and dish crew system.
Office work jobs include cleaning the main building and the dorms, working in the garden, greenhouse, or barn, or assisting in the library or science lab. Office work is monitored by student Office Work Leaders, and student Dish Crew Leaders supervise students working in the kitchen.
Work privileges are a chance for the entire community to work together. A few times each year there is a need for extensive labor in the school or, more often, on our farm. On these occasions, we cancel regularly scheduled activities and work together to get the job done. Favorite annual work privileges include planting and harvesting the potato crop that provides us with potatoes for the school year.
